Staying Connected While Cutting the Cord

At this time of year, parents are seeing their children off as they embark on their college journeys.  To be sure, there is a lot of stress over shopping for dorm room gear, textbooks, and such.  Parents are also pondering how to stay connected once their teens leave home.  Over the years, we've seen parents becoming increasingly hands-on in the minutiae of their children's lives from friendships, sports & extracurriculars, and school work.  Consequently, there comes the question of how these teens will now manage without their parents micromanaging things.  In this episode, I discuss this transition with two amazing mothers of college students and young adults who can speak from their personal experiences as well as their professional work with children, teens, young adults. Organizing for Back to School Success

Back by popular demand is an insightful conversation I had with two professionals who are at the top of their game in professional organization and educational coaching — C. Lee Cawley of Simplify You and Kristin Carpenter of Linder Educational Coaching. It seemed to me that parents would certainly value their tips of the trade and I was right.  After the supplies are purchased, it's time to help our students get down to business.  Sometimes, parents don't know where to start.  Thanks to C. Lee and Kristin, here are a few ideas! (Air Date:  September 11, 2015/Rebroadcast:  August 31, 2018)

Shrinking the Digital Divide So Kids Can Soar

It has been said that disparate internet access in our country exacerbates inequality among our citizens.  Bridging the global challenge is, in fact, a global challenge:

“Over 90 per cent of the jobs currently created in the European Union require technological skills. The internet is not a luxury, it’s the difference between getting a job or ending up marginalised in a world full of screens, between inheriting poverty or having a better life than your parents.” – Equal Times, May 30, 2018

Thankfully, today's guests are doing their part as tech-savvy entrepreneurs and reaching back to equip children to understand and harness the power of emerging technologies to shape their future success.                                 (Air Date:  July 12, 2018)

Building Resilience: One Stone at a Time

When facing life's hard knocks, we can't always rely on external advantages like fame, wealth, or connections to help us rise to the top.  Resilience, on the other hand, can bring us back if we are willing to persevere and learn the valuable lessons setbacks can teach us.  Children can build resilience early as they tackle tough school subjects like math or push themselves to learn new skills.  Yes, resilience is invaluable as we face challenges as children and on through adulthood.

It was my pleasure to speak with Dr. Angela McIver, Founder or Trapezium Math Club and Dinner Table Math along with Carmen Daniels, President of Solutions Marketing Group and advocate for persons with disabilities.  Here's what they had to say…  (Air Date:  June 29, 2018)

Speak to Understand: Building Bridges and Creating Community

In social settings as well as at work and school, we often struggle when relating to others that are not like us.  Often, there is fear and unease which we are hesitant to admit. Rather than show compassion and transparency, we often do and say things that are hurtful, dismissive, and even disrespectful to each other.  Joining me to talk about this are Randi Bryant, author and blogger along with Tonda Bean, educational consultant.  Let me know what you think!  (Air Date:  June 8, 2018)

Living Whole: Minding Your Mental Health

This is the time of year that we focus anew on our health, most notably our physical health.  How often do we think consciously about preserving our mental health.  Did you know that a study conducted by the World Health Organization, and the World Economic Forum indicates that 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental health conditions, yet only 40% actually receive treatment?

I had the chance to talk with two professionals in hopes of enlightening us about the benefits of counseling when needed and addressing common misconceptions about mental health treatment. (Air Date:  February 9, 2018)

Guests:  Valerie Woolford, Licensed Professional Counselor and Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor and Dr. Linda McGhee, Clinical Psychologist, McGhee & Associates.
